The tiny Essex parish of Navestock is in the Borough of Brentwood, positioned just 5 kilometres from Brentwood. The name Navestock means stump on the headland, but this stump first organised races under rules in 1870. Meetings had been staged for a number of years each Whit-Tuesday, but usually involved ponies or hacks. The course was in the mead behind the Green Man Inn and the meeting on Tuesday 7th June opened with a 2 mile match for £25 which saw Lady of the Lake defeat Bee Bee. Mr Poole’s Lady Middleton was first passed the post in the Stewards Plate but was disqualified for not making the weight. However, he was amply compensated by winning both the Belhus Hurdle and the Dudbrook Hurdle with his mare War Queen. Racing continued for a further 7 years until the final meeting on Tuesday 22nd May 1877. After this meeting all further races were not under rules. |
